The first time I attended St. Catherine High School was in 1979 to participate in a choir competition. I was attending Old Harbour Primary at the time and for some reason someone though I could sing and placed me on the choir. After we did our piece, my friend and I decided to walk the ground of the majestic lady as we were in the process of deciding which school to choose for our common entrance examination. I remember being so consumed by what I saw that they had to send out a search party to find us, fifteen minutes after the time we were suppose to depart. We were scolded out of our skins when we returned to the bus but I did not mind a bit, you see, I had concluded by them, without as doubt that this is the school I wanted to attend.
There are a few things in this life, were I given the opportunity to choose again I would make the same choice. Attending St. Catherine High is undoubtedly one of them. There is this overwhelming sense of pride and deference that overwhelms me each time I think of my alma mater. I am honoured to have graced her hallowed halls and to have been blessed with a faculty that took the education of their ward personally. Those were indeed educators who were on a mission, a mission that has paid off with some of the highest offices in this world being represented by a St. Catherine High graduate.
My sojourn with the grand old lady was a wonderful one and I am sure that the vast majority of us will conclude the we are the better as a result of that journey. She has instilled in us two of the most important attributes that any institution can give to its charges, attributes that if applied in all our endeavours is guaranteed to bring positive results; “ Preces Et Opera Omnia Vincunt”, Prayer and Work Conquers All.
