Our Favorite Teachers at SCHS

Hello,

I stumbled on this site today. I think it is great. My name is Sandra Johnson Baldwin. I taught Music and English during the years 1975 to 1977 (I think). I especially enjoyed working the choirs as we sang for Festivals or programs at the school. I well remember Sis Pascal, Mrs. Anderson, Mr. Neal, Ms. Fuller, Mrs. Joan Mills, Ms. Marva Mills, and others. I currently live in Brooklyn, New York (soon to move to Central Florida), and am currently the Director of Staff Education at a nursing facility in Queens, New York. (I changed to the nursing profession when I came to the U.S., but now I am doing both teaching and nursing.) I sometimes run into past students her in New York, but not lately. I would love to attend a reunion.

Mr. Smikle taught me Chemistry and I believe Physics and he had a huge influence on my educational development. He was very intense but at the same time a very knowledgeable and understanding person. He always told his class that we can do whatever we set out minds at doing, all we need is the will power to do something and we will succeed. I continue to encourage my kids the same way and have tried to influence their life with all the knowledge gained from attending STCHS.

My favorite teacher was Mr. Milton Baker, math teacher in junior school (1976 - 1978). Not only was he a great math teacher, he understood the needs of students and was quite caring. I was able to speak with him about any concerns or issues I had (often unrelated to math class) and he proved over and over to be a great help. Much of my inspiration today came through him. I can attest to the fact that I am who I am today, partly because of his impact on my life at St. Catherine High School. Thank you Mr. Baker!

My favorite teacher at St Catherine High School was Mr. Peterkin, my auto mechanic teacher. We affectionately referred to him as Mr. P. What I like about Mr. P., was his ability to communicate with his students at their level. He was never too busy to listen to our points and queries, and willingly gave his opinions to the questions we asked. I remember him treating some of us to lunch at the school canteen and how happy we were, since we get to save our lunch money. Most of all, Mr. P., taught us that education was a life long affairs which did not end in high school, and if we want to be successful, we would have to work hard and pay attention to details. After many years in the military and in college, these words are still fresh in my memory. Thanks Mr.P.
